This begins a set of Substack posts which I will use to recommend bloggers and other writers who I follow. I will add to it as I have time. Although this one is being sent out by email, in general these posts will only appear on the website and will not be sent out through email. They may include bloggers on Substack or on other platforms, as well as journalists and other writers of short commentaries.
The first two are both blogs which I highly recommend, by Cathy Sunshine and Branko Milanović. Both authors feature a variety of content, sharp insights, and good writing, albeit in very different spheres.
Cathy writes about the experiences of women in the third age of life, defined as the period that begins in late middle age and continues as long as health and energy allow. She touches on themes ranging from political engagement to downsizing to caregiving and end-of-life issues. Her writing stands out for her well-crafted prose and use of interviews to bring in other people’s perspectives. (Full disclosure: I am her husband, but I think you will agree.)
Branko Milanović, born and educated in Belgrade, wrote his doctoral dissertation on inequality in Yugoslavia in 1987. He later spent 20 years at the World Bank with a primary focus on quantitative studies of global inequality. I have been reading his analyses of global inequality since 1999. The “More” in the title of the blog is a very expansive set of topics, ranging from commentary on current global issues to the histories of economic thought, personal reflections on growing up in the former Yugoslavia, and book reviews of fiction and non-fiction.
In future posts I hope to highlight more of my favorite posts from each of these blogs.
But for now I just invite you to take a look at a few samples and see for yourself.
